Raydell Early, 2022, Prisma stick on paper, 24 x 12 inches

Et al. is pleased to present a solo show of new works on paper by Raydell Early.

From the website of Creative Growth:

Born 1952, Oakland, California
Has practiced at Creative Growth since 1981

Raydell Early labors over his drawings with a firm stance. He stands to draw and works with determined focus. His abstract process involves a sculptural element by building pastel layers, evolving into a geometric kaleidoscope. Early cites the inspiration for his work as the stained-glass windows of the church he attends.

The play of forms and color across Raydell Early’s pieces is electric. The shapes jostle against one another; there’s a strange special quality to the compositions.

We came to Early’s work like many of the artists we exhibit, through the suggestion of an artist/author/curator/friend. Working with artist Faith Icecold on an upcoming show, they provided several incredible suggestions for a group show, but their first suggestion, a three-person with Icecold’s work in conversation with pieces by Early and Alake Shilling, became the exhibition we’ll be holding next year. When we took a look at the recent works by Early and couldn’t help but want to show them all; we framed the body of work that became this solo show of Early’s pieces, with more of his work in the three-person show upcoming.

This is Et al.’s second time collaborating with the artists of Creative Growth, an organization that along with NIAD and Creativity Explored forms an incredible resource not just for the creation of work but a foundation to support the careers of artists with developmental disabilities within the broader contemporary art scene. Previously Et al. included the incredible work of Creative Growth artist Aurie Ramirez in a group show alongside Matt Borruso, Anthony Discenza, Katelyn Eichwald, Koak, Lily Ludlow, and Dennis Witkin we curated in Mexico City. We believe in the incredible artists and hard-working staff of these programs.
