Et al. is pleased to present new works by Alexandria Tarver and Nancy Nguyen for NADA New York 2025.

Tarver’s new works expand small sketches made in Baja, California into works on paper; both the sketch and the paintings are beautifully framed together. Tarver writes:

There is a place I’ve gone to twice in the past two years, a small house on a strip of land touching the Pacific Ocean in a foreign country. The house is called nothing, or mabye “no big deal.”

I’ve gone there alone, completely alone, twice, for two short periods of time. I have a lot of responsibilities in the City, and they require a lot of my presence. It is difficult to get away

While there, I look at the sky. I look at the land. I look at the ocean. And I think. I look at all the colors and I think. I do not dream, I rarely imagine. But I do think. I tangle and untangle and retangle.

It’s not very relaxing.

Sometimes, I find myself longing quite fiercely, for what? I am not sure. Maybe it’s nothing, or no big deal.

Unfortunately, the days there are far too short.

The first time I went there, I really didn’t draw. The second time, I did.

Paired with Tarver are new works by Nancy Nguyen, continuing from our recent solo show with the artist. Whereas Tarver’s works reflect the external, observed world, Nguyen’s abstraction arise from her Buddhist practice, both the improvisational space of her meditation, and the riddles and metaphors of Buddhist text.

Alexandria Tarver (b. 1989 Houston, TX) Tarver has had solo and two-person exhibitions at Deli Gallery, New York; Cooler Gallery, New York, and Et al., San Francisco, and has been in group exhibitions at Alexander Gray Associates, Germantown, NY; GRIMM, London, UK; Marinaro Gallery, New York, NY; Public Gallery, London, UK; Nino Mier Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Arsenal Gallery, New York, NY; Alter Space, Mexico City, MX; Danziger Gallery Project Room, New York, NY.

Nancy Nguyen (b. 1994 San Jose, CA) is an artist living in Berkeley, CA. Nguyen’s work examines paradoxes found in Buddhist texts and aims to dismantle nature into transphenomenal experiences. She uses the act of painting to explore the tension between awareness and the inconceivable, in mutual annihilation. Nguyen received her BFA from San Jose State University and has recently exhibited at Et Al, / (Slash), Personal Space, and Pt. 2.
